Michelle Keegan has responded to viewers who accused her of looking “awkward” at the National Television Awards, saying she was “nervous”.

Keegan presented the Best Period Drama gong to Call The Midwife alongside Tina Moore at the celebratory bash last week.

Some viewers took aim at her presenting stint with one tweeting: “Michelle Keegan could have sounded a bit more enthusiastic when announcing the winner.”

Another commented: “Bit awkward between Michelle Keegan and that woman then.”

Setting the record straight, Keegan – who attended the bash with her husband Mark Wright – said she was overcome with nerves.

Writing in her blog for Hello! she said: “We presented the ‘Best Period Drama’ award and Call The Midwife won. I can’t lie I was nervous. Tina was too!

“It is nerve wracking presenting an award, especially when it’s live on television too. We made a good team though, and managed to calm ourselves down, and it was an honour to present the award with her.”

Keegan - who has previously received two NTA nominations - was reunited with her former Coronation Street cast members at the event.

The ITV soap failed to pick up the Serial Drama award, but Faye Brookes - who plays Kate Connor - was awarded the Best Newcomer gong.
