Morrissey has announced plans for a one-off Manchester show, after saying that he had no more plans to perform live in the UK.

The former Smiths frontman will perform at the Manchester Arena on August 20, making the surprise announcement on his website True To You on Thursday.

This will be the music icon’s first show in his hometown for four years and his only show in the UK this year.

The announcement read: “Morrissey will play Manchester Arena on Saturday 20 August. Damien Dempsey is very special guest. Tickets are on sale this Friday (8 July), max 4 per person.

“This will be Morrissey's first appearance in Manchester for four years, and his only 2016 show in England.”

The singer – real name Stephen Patrick Morrissey – will also perform a show in Tel-Aviv on August 23.

Just last year the 57-year-old suggested that his touring days were over, saying that his two planned UK dates would be his last.

In a statement he said: “There is absolutely no way that we can generate any interest from record labels in the United Kingdom, therefore the imminent two nights at Hammersmith are likely to be our final ever UK shows.

“We are obsessively grateful for all interest and loyalty from our audience ... throughout 28 years ... but without new releases, there is no point in any additional touring.

“Thank you for so many absolutely incredible times. The pleasure and privilege is mine ...”

Just hours after tickets for the one-off show went on sale, fans complained that tickets had sold out on official websites and were soon appearing on unofficial sites for inflated prices.
