Noel Gallagher joked it is “virtually impossible” for him to get better as Oasis topped Radio X’s annual Best of British list.

The Mancunian band knocked Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody off the top spot with their 1994 hit Live Forever.

The third single from their debut album Definitely Maybe was the band’s first top 10 hit and was performed by Liam Gallagher and Chris Martin at last year’s One Love concert for the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack.

Oasis dominated this year’s Best of British Top 100 with 16 songs, beating their previous year’s total of 13 with tracks including Don’t Look Back in Anger (third) Wonderwall (sixth), Slide Away (seventh) and Champagne Supernova (ninth).

Speaking about the list, which is voted for by Radio X listeners, Noel said: “I have always tried to aim higher than I think is possible. Some people try to be bigger or better than their contemporaries or their predecessors… Me? I’m just trying to be better than myself which as we now know is virtually impossible.

“Radio X listeners you are the wind beneath my wings. You are the perfectly heated water in the swimming pool of my third home, the loose change down the back of my Gorilla skin sofa. The perfectly rolled Cuban cigar in my solid gold cigar case.”

Legend: The late David Bowie featured seven times on the list

He continued: “You are also sadly the most nostalgic demographic on earth. Saying that, my children and my children’s children’s children will quaff in your general direction for many years to come. I salute you.”

The Stone Roses’ I Am The Resurrection and The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony completed the top five while The Smith’s There is a Light That Never Goes Out and Arctic Monkeys’ debut I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor finished off the top 10.

The list was revealed on air today with musical stalwart John Kennedy counting down the top 30.
