Kate Winslet was close to tears as she watched Leonardo DiCaprio pick up the Oscar for Best Actor.

Winslet was seen looking teary-eyed and holding her hands up to her mouth as she watched DiCaprio thank his friends and make an impassioned speech about climate change.

Fans of the actor mimicked Winslet’s emotions and took to Twitter to congratulate the star on his win.

DiCaprio received a standing ovation and rapturous applause from the audience as he was finally honoured with the gong he had missed out on five times.

On receiving the award from Julianne Moore he said: “Thank you to the academy thank you to all of you in this room I have to congratulate the other incredible nominees this year foir their unbelievable performances.

"First off to my brother in this endeavour, Tom Hardy. Tom your fierce talent on screen can only be surpassed by your friendship off screen. To Mr. Alenjdro you have forged your way into histiory this past few years. Thank you for creating a transcendent cinema experience for us.

DiCaprio went on to thank a string of names before making a speech about climate change.

He finished: "Making The Revenant was about mans relationship to the natural world. Our production needed to move to the Southern tip of this planet to find snow. Climate change is real it is happening right now it is the most urgent threat facing our species and we need to work together and stop procrastinating. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted."
