“Phenomenal” Sheridan Smith has been defended by fans over claims that she's been giving “erratic” performances during her new tour.

The actress and singer’s fans have taken to social media to defend the star after reports claimed audiences had been shocked by her onstage performance.

On Monday night, the singer reportedly joked during the closing night of her tour about feeling “naked” as she was used to hiding behind characters as an actress.

She said: “This is so new to me, because obviously I’m used to playing roles and hiding behind characters, so bear with me. I feel naked right now. I will get naked — but in the second half.”

Smith later reportedly asked the audience if they could see her Spanx underwear, joking that they could “see them now”, after uncrossing her legs.

However, fans flocked to Twitter to hail the singer as “brilliant” and expressing their confusion for the criticism Smith had received following the show.

One fan wrote: “She was being herself, and that’s what we wanted to see, we paid for Sheridan Smith this time not a character.”

Another tweeted: “You’ll find this a representation of most women on the planet. In the midst of still trying to fight to be allowed to be ourselves, well done for insulting us all.”

Meanwhile one posted: “Okay well @Sheridansmith1 was phenomenal this evening. My obsession with her talent is just growing and growing #sheridansmith #sheridanontour.”
