Poldark’s Aidan Turner narrowly avoided serious injury as he filmed dramatic scenes in the sea.

Turner, 33, was rescuing his onscreen wife Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) at Nampara Cove, Cornwall when filming took a dangerous turn.

The actor was hit by a boat as he attempted to grab Demelza and carry her to safety during filming in winter.

Recalling the incident during series two he told Radio Times: "There's nothing like the Cornish sea at the height of winter for putting you in your place.

"We were filming me lifting Demelza out of a boat in the actual sea when this huge wave picked up the boat and slammed it into my head.

"I dropped her in the water – not very Ross Poldark.”

Turner said the incident left one cameraman with concussion and joked that Mother Nature does not care about jeopardising the successful BBC drama.

He continued: "And nobody was coming to see if I'm okay. I was the man injured… But one of the underwater cameramen got cracked as well and he was concussed.

"These waves, you wouldn't think there's anything to them. But once you get out there you're at the mercy of Mother Nature and she doesn't care how well the previous season rated."

The cast and crew are currently filming the third series of the Cornish drama and fans can expect new faces Josh Whitehouse and Sean Gilder.

Whitehouse will play Hugh Armitage, a member of the aristocracy, while Gilder will take on the role of the "reckless" Tholly Tregirls who was friends with Poldark's father.

Poldark is on BBC One at 9pm on Sunday.
