BBC Radio 1 has announced a major shake-up with Friday now a part of the weekend, meaning Nick Grimshaw and Greg James will no longer be on-air on a Friday.

The Friday breakfast show, starting from June, will be known Radio 1’s Weekend Breakfast broadcast from 6.30am until 10am with Dev and Alice Levine.

Maya Jama will then host Radio 1’s Greatest Hits until 1pm and then Strictly Come Dancing star Mollie King will partner Matt Edmondson from 1pm until 4pm for a brand new show to welcome in the weekend.

James’ Official Chart Countdown will become Scott Mills’ countdown as the presenter is set to fulfil his life-long dream revealing the nation’s song of the week.

King confirmed the exciting news on Twitter with a cute joke, writing: “I’m SO excited to announce I’m officially a Radio 1 presenter!

“From June you’ll be able to tune in to ‘Matt and Mollie’ every week on Friday, Saturday AND Sunday! I literally can’t wait!! Dreams do come true guys, go out there and get them!! @MattEdmondson @BBCR1.”

She added in the press release: “I’ve grown up listening to Radio 1 and I can’t wait to be one of the team. This is an absolute dream for me!

“The only person more excited than me is my mum - who is delighted I finally have a proper job!”

Grimshaw, who has become a household name with his show on the station, tweeted the news with the caption: “It’s not just me being a lazy a**e, it’s all change on Fridays....” while James called them “exciting changes”.

Ben Cooper, controllers of BBC Radio 1, said of the changes: “The weekend will start here at Radio 1 on a Friday morning giving our young audience that feel good factor a day early.

“It’s our job at Radio 1 to reinvent the way young people listen to the radio, to disrupt traditional thinking and to look for new ways in which to grow audiences.”
