The excitement proved to be a little too much

Radio 1’s treasure hunt competition got off to an expectedly sweary start on Thursday morning as a potential winner dropped the f-bomb.

Earlier this week, the station announced plans for a giveaway which would see a lucky listener get their hands on tickets to Glastonbury, Radio 1’s Big Weekend and either Reading or Leeds festival.

But there was one catch - they had to find the ticket first.

Breakfast show presenter Greg James kicked off the challenge by revealing four golden tickets had been hidden separately in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Greg also explained that Radio 1 presenters were lurking near each location, ready to pounce when lucky winners reached the secret spots.

Thanks to clues including “the tickets are in the city where you'd find the tallest clock tower in that nation”, it took just a couple of hours for the first golden ticket to be found in Cardiff.

“I need to tell you this, you’re live on Radio 1,” Huw Stephens told listener Brad. “Can I ask you a very important question, do you want to go to Glastonbury?”

As expected, Brad very much wanted to go to Glastonbury and, perhaps understandably, the excitement got the better of him.

He replied: “F**k yeah, I do.”

Groans could then be heard from Greg and his team in the studio, as well as Huw, who said: “Don’t swear. I have to apologise for the strong language.”

Brad could be heard saying “I’m so sorry” in the background, before Greg apologised again.

“We just want to apologise once again for the bad language we heard just then,” he said. “Sorry if you were offended by that.

“ Obviously it’s a very exciting moment and it looks like it got the better of him.”

Unfortunately for Brad, there was a twist in the competition and he was told he’d need to enter a code on a locked box to nab the tickets.

The code was the last three digits of the Radio 1 phone number but he drew a blank and failed to remember it.

The tickets then went to a second listener who managed to unlock the box with the number 100, after googling the answer - which won Brad a lot of sympathy on Twitter:

This year’s Glastonbury sold out in less than an hour earlier this month.

So far just one act - superstar Diana Ross - has been confirmed for the Worthy Farm event.

The location for Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2020 is yet to be revealed.
