Rihanna has blasted Snapchat after the social media platform hosted an advert that joked about her being assaulted by Chris Brown.

The singer released a statement saying the app had ‘let down victims of domestic abuse’.

In a lengthy Instagram post, she wrore: “Now Snapchat I know you already know you ain’t my fave app out there, but I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!

“I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV victims and made a joke of it!”

“This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them… but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet…you let us down!

“Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

Earlier this week Snapchat users slated the app after being shown an ad that invited them to play a game of ‘Would You Rather?’ with the options being ‘Slap Rihanna’ or ‘Punch Chris Brown’.

A spokesperson for Snapchat said the ad had been approved ‘in error’.

“The ad was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened,” the spokesperson said.

In 2009, Brown assaulted his then girlfriend Rihanna after they became embroiled in an argument.

He opened up about the incident in a documentary last year, recalling: “[Rihanna] starts going off, she throws the phone, ‘I hate you!’, whatever, whatever, she starts hitting me, we’re in a little Lamborghini, you know she’s fighting me.

“Like I remember she tried to kick me, just like her beating s***, but then I really hit her.

“With a closed fist, like I punched her, and it busted her lip, and when I saw it I was in shock, I was like ‘f***, why did I hit her like that?’”
