Rob Brydon has revealed that many fans were fooled into thinking his comedy The Trip is based on real life — with his wife even comforted by a viewer over his on-screen affair.

The comedian stars in the series with Steve Coogan as they bicker while visiting restaurants on a road trip.

After two successful series with the BBC in the Lake District and Italy, they have reunited with director Michael Winterbottom for a third trip with Sky Atlantic set in Spain.

The pair play caricatured versions of themselves and act out loose plot lines.

Brydon said: “I had ‘an affair’ in series two, this fling with a girl on a boat.

“The day after it went out, my real wife was taking the boys to school and the teacher came up to her and put an arm on her shoulder and said, ‘This must be a very difficult time for you’.”
