Robbie Williams has responded to going viral over his use of hand sanitiser on New Year’s Eve with a hilarious Instagram video.

Williams, 42, was captured cleaning his hands after he mingled with fans at BBC’s Robbie Rocks Big Ben Live on Saturday night.

The former Take That singer was holding hands with members of the audience for a rendition of Auld Lang Syne before he climbed back on stage and grimaced as he squirted the anti-bacterial gel onto his hands.

Williams has since responded to the fall out by posting a tongue-in-cheek Instagram video of himself.

The short clip shows the Party Like a Russian singer wishing a woman a happy new year.

As the woman walks away Williams says, “See you in a bit babe” before reaching for a large bottle of sanitiser. He pumps it out and shudders as he rubs it into his hands.

Williams captioned the video: “Regram from @aydafieldwilliams. Wiping the slate clean for 2017 #instafun #instagood #cleanslate #familyfunday.”

Despite being a matter of seconds into the New Year, fans hailed Williams’ sanitising incident as the “highlight of 2017”.

The clip quickly went viral as people shared his reaction online, with one eagle-eyed viewer tweeting: “Robbie Williams sanitising his hand after touching the public is the most hysterical start to a new year ever. The year of memes commences.”

A third posted: “Robbie Williams and the anti-bac has already defined 2017.”
