Robert De Niro has written a letter of support to Meryl Streep, congratulating her on her Golden Globes speech and saying he ‘shares her sentiments’.

The Oscar-winning actor, who starred opposite Streep in 1984’s Falling in Love, praised his friend for calling out Donald Trump as she collected Cecil B. DeMille Award during Sunday’s ceremony.

In the short note, obtained by People magazine, De Niro said that Meryl had inspired others to speak up.

“Meryl – What you said was great. It needed to be said, and you said it beautifully. I have so much respect for you that you did it while the world was celebrating your achievements,” he wrote.

“I share your sentiments about punks and bullies. Enough is enough.

“You, with your elegance and intelligence, have a powerful voice – one that inspires others to speak up as they should so their voices will be heard too. It is so important that we ALL speak up. We love you. Bob.”

Streep blasted the President-elect for mocking a disabled reporter, talking about the importance of empathy and calling those in power to account.

Streep added: “We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage. “

Trump issued his own response to the speech on Twitter, writing: “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a.....

“"groveling" when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
