Singer Sam Smith has revealed that he wants Ellie Goulding to record the next James Bond theme as she would “smash it”.

Smith – who kept his involvement with the Spectre song Writing's On The Wall a secret for a year – is keen for Goulding to follow in his footsteps.

When asked by Dave Berry and Lisa Snowdon on the Capital FM Breakfast Show who he thinks should record the next song, he replied: “Ellie Goulding would smash it. Her new single is unreal. It’s amazing.”

In a bid to keep his identity a secret, Smith led the public to believe that Goulding had recorded the theme to Spectre.

"I heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it, I heard loads of different things but it's definitely not me," he told the presenting duo in July.

Speaking on this morning’s show about the conversation, the Lay Me Down singer said: “I watched it back and was like ‘Oh my God, I’m such a good liar.”

As an apology for lying, Smith unveiled a sneak preview of the brand new Bond song ahead of the full song on Friday.

He also tweeted the 15 second clip featuring dramatic strings and brass to his three million followers alongside the caption: "4 days!! Thanks to everyone pre-ordering, can't wait for you to hear 'Writing's On The Wall'."
