Sigrid has thrown her support behind the England team — but hopes fans will divide their loyalties tonight and show up to her gig during the World Cup semi-final.

The Norwegian pop star is enjoying a stellar year. She was named BBC Sound of 2018 and her debut single Don’t Kill My Vibe became an international hit. Tonight she will play at Somerset House as England take on Croatia.

At HMV in Oxford Street, where she performed a set last night, Sigrid told A List: “Obviously I’m cheering on England, but we are going to be concentrating on playing our songs and I hope people will show up.”

Despite her rising profile, the 21-year-old said she has no intention of becoming a pop diva. “We don’t really have celebrity culture in Norway,” she said. “When I’m not working I love to come home and I’m happiest just hiking in the countryside. I love nature.”

Sigrid comes from a studious family and her brother has just finished his PhD at Cambridge. “I think if I hadn’t pursued music I would have been a teacher,” she added. “I love history, English and politics.”

The singer praised her record label for allowing her to be her own person and shun the sexy clothes favoured by some of her counterparts. “I see myself as a proper musician,” she said. “From the beginning I felt if I wanted to be known as an artist, I should just be focusing on my music.

“A lot of artists create a character that they become on stage but that just wasn’t for me. I’ve never been under pressure to look a certain way — my label would never suggest that.”

As well as a busy summer of appearances at festivals, Sigrid is also working on her debut album. She added: “I’m very excited to be working on it.

“There is no finishing date yet. It will be finished when it’s finished.”
