Harrison Ford has opened up about the relationship between Han Solo and Peter Mayhew’s Chewbacca, describing them as an “old married couple”.

Ford, 73, is reprising his role as the galactic bounty hunter alongside the loveable Wookiee in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and revealed not much has changed between the duo since fans last saw them in Return of the Jedi.

Speaking to Empire magazine’s Star Wars special, Ford said: “They were very much like an old married couple to start with. I think people will find them very much the same as ever.”

Recalling the moment they were reunited on the set of the seventh instalment, he added: “It was as warm as fuzzy as you might imagine. It was great to see old friends.”

“I was sitting in my trailer,” Mayhew told the publication. “There was a knock at the door and someone shouted, ‘Where’s that walking carpet?’ It was Harrison. He came in, gave me a big hug and said, ‘Welcome Back’.”

He continued: “We still have the same bond, we look after each other. We are like a married couple! Especially when we’re in the cockpit together. I like it.”

Solo has featured prominently in the trailers and TV spots which have seen him return to the Millenium Falcon, reunite with Princess Leia and lead Rey and Finn in battle.
