Stephen Fry has returned to work for the first time since revealing his battle with prostate cancer, attending a live reading in Los Angeles.

On Monday, the 60-year-old gave a reading at Letters Live, a London event which made its US debut at the Theatre in the Ace Hotel.

Fry was one of many celebrities to attend the event, with Late Late Show host James Corden, Star Wars’ Mark Hamill and actress Isla Fisher all putting in an appearance.

Letters Live is a celebration of written letters, read by many performers, marking the enduring power of literary correspondence.

At the end of the last week, Fry posted an emotional YouTube clip detailing his recent diagnosis of cancer and treatment he has undergone.

Fry revealed he was diagnosed with the disease just before Christmas after visiting his doctor for a flu jab before being sent for an MRI and a biopsy that uncovered the “aggressive little bugger”.

Speaking about the operation, he said: “In the first week of January, I had the operation, it seemed to go well.

“They took the prostate out, and eleven lymph nodes. It was an aggressive little bugger. It’s a bit of a business having an operation like that, there are five holes punctured in you, it’s like being stabbed five times.

Although he won’t know the overall outcome of the operation until his PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) levels are checked, he assured fans: “For the time being I'm fit and well and happy."
