An Indian summer swelled attendance at the Brick Lane festival to a record 60,000 visitors.

Organisers believe the late summer sunshine helped attract people from across the capital to the East End street party, which mixes food, fashion, live music and movies.

Billed as an alternative to the Notting Hill carnival, the festival celebrated its 11th year yesterday, with the street's Bangladeshi restaurants setting up outdoor food stalls bringing a taste of the subcontinent to Shoreditch.

The event incorporates the Bangla Town curry festival, which runs until Saturday. A special low-fat green curry, using locally sourced vegetables, has been created for this year's celebrations. An I Love Brick Lane fashion show was held at the Old Truman Brewery featuring nine up and coming designers.

The festival also marked the opening of the Future London exhibition, which encourages environmental sustainability, at the Truman Brewery. There was poetry and a line-up of DJs later in the evening. Only three arrests were made, for minor incidents.
