YouTuber Tati Westbrook has opened up on her decision to call out former friend James Charles in a new video, asking fans to stop “hating on him.”

In a new video titled Why I Did It, Westbrook revealed that she had intended her video to act as a “wake up call” for Charles in a “last ditch effort to be really loud and vocal” about his alleged actions.

In the 18-minute clip, she admitted that she knew that her post would “cause a lot of controversy” but said that she thought that she “would be the one to take the hit.”

The beauty expert, who has collaborated with Charles on numerous videos and even asked him to do her wedding make-up, told followers that she “really” wants the online “hate” against him to stop.

“I want the picking sides, and the abusive memes and the language, and all of that, I really hope on both sides it can stop,” she said. “That’s not why I made the video.”

“I don’t want you guys hating on him,” she continued. “It’s painful to watch someone that you have cared for be dragged and to know that this started because of me.

“I don’t think anyone deserves that. I think people deserve a wake-up call and people deserve to be called out for actions.”

Westbrook went on to confirm that she would be “taking a time out” from social media “because it’s a really dark place for me right now.”

Viewers threw their support behind the 37-year-old after she posted a tell-all video titled BYE SISTER last weekend, causing her subscriber numbers to rocket from 6.3 million to over 10 million.

Meanwhile, Charles’ numbers have dropped from over 16 million to around 13.4 million, with some former fans even destroying his make-up palettes in clips shared on social media. He has also been unfollowed by a number of celebrity friends.

Westbrook’s initial 43-minute post saw her criticise Charles, 19, for promoting a rival haircare product, before accusing him of “problematic behaviour” – including “manipulating” men’s sexuality and trying to “turn straight men gay.”

The vlogger denied claims that he had pressured anyone into a romantic relationship, and posted a video in which he apologised to Westbrook “for everything that I put you through.”

“I’m so disappointed in myself that I ruined our relationship,” he said. “Throughout all of this, what sucks the most is that I know there’s nothing I can say or do to ever earn that friendship or trust back.”

Charles has an estimated net worth of $12 million (£9 million) and was announced as the first ever male spokesperson for US make-up brand CoverGirl in 2016.
