Taylor Swift has granted a group of 70-year-old actors a last minute reprieve by allowing them to use one of her songs in their play.

The pop star had previously banned the cast of Sydney-based play Seventeen from using Shake It Off in their production but changed her mind at the last minute.

Following a social media campaign, during which the cast tweeted Swift and a number of her famous friends, permission was finally granted for the hit single to be used.

The play, which is opening at Belvoir Street theatre, originally included a dance routine by the actors to the chart-topping track, but rights to play the song were denied shortly before opening night.

The cast and crew promptly started the twitter campaign in a bid to get Swift to contact her publisher and revoke the ban, with the hashtag #greygrey4taytay.

After contacting the likes of Ed Sheeran and Russell Crowe and with the support of Tim Minchin, Swift finally noticed and gave the cast a reprieve.

Just a few hours earlier, the star tweeted birthday love to best friend Karlie Kloss, posting a photo of her with her boyfriend Calvin Harris.

She wrote: "Some of my best times are with her, laughing in the kitchen. Happy Birthday to the ray of light that is karliekloss!"
