The proof was in the pudding for Lord Sugar who sent home Katie Bulmer-Cooke and Sanjay Sood-Smith after they failed to impress him with their 'premium desserts' - and business plans - on The Apprentice last night.

The candidates were summoned to Tate Britain by Lord Sugar who told them that their challenge was to make premium puddings and pitch them to major supermarkets with the winning team the one who secured the most orders.

After using too many flavours, too much expensive saffron, and with Mark Wright losing "his bundle" during a pitch to Tesco, Team Tenacity found themselves in the Bridge Cafe with only 13,500 orders of their 'A Trifle Different' desserts to Team Summit's 25,000 tea inspired cheesecakes.

While Team Summit tasted macaroons and martinis on board a yacht from James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, Katie, Sanjay and Mark were summoned to the boardroom.

Despite having "common sense" and being a "good organiser" Lord Sugar was unable to see how he could make "big bucks" from Katie's healthy restaurant in Sunderland and she was sent her home.

Things heated up as Mark Wright attempted to convince Lord Sugar that Sanjay's business plan - a social network for the fitness industry - would never make money. Financier Sanjay was praised for being an "intelligent and clever fellow" but was fired from the competition.

"Good salesman" Mark was saved, and will join Bianca Miller, Roisin Hogan, Daniel Lassman and Solomon Akhtar for a business plan grilling from Claude Littner, Claudine Collins, Mike Soutar and former Apprentice winner Ricky Martin next week.

The Apprentice returns Wednesday 17 December at 9pm on BBC One.
