A ski slope in the summer...in the middle of London? Could Britain's climate have changed so radically?

Well, no, it is just a German conceptual artist preparing for his bizarre new exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery.

As one of several artistic "actions" before the show opens next week, sculptor Andreas Slominski built a temporary slope through the gallery, covered it with artificial snow and recruited a skier to spend a day on it.

Every time the skier completed the course he rewaxed his skis, with the used wax being turned into a candle that will be displayed in the exhibition.

Another eccentric "action" planned by Slominski is for two mime artists to carry an invisible painting from the Royal College of Art to the Serpentine, where it will be "hung".

He will also create a work within one of the galleries using a glider plane. The Serpentine's curator Rochelle Steiner said: "What unifies all of this is the absurdity but alsothe complexity. In a world obsessed with efficiency everything he is doing in this show is incredibly labourintensive."

The centrepiece of the show will be a display of Slominski's sculptural traps. Ms Steiner said: "They can be as ridiculous, like the monkey-trap, or as simple, like the mouse-trap, as you can imagine."

Andreas Slominski's exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery runs from Tuesday until 12 June, admission free.
