The Classic BRIT Nominees 2011

Once again core classical artists dominate the nominations, with three British musicians competing for Female of the year, while Antonio Pappano and Rolando Villazón lead the nominations with two apiece.

The public will decide the winner of the showcase Classic FM Album of the Year Award, while John Barry, the late film score composer, will be honoured with a posthumous Outstanding Contribution to Music Award

Female Artist of the Year

Trumpeter Alison Balsom ('Italian Concertos')
Violinist Nicola Benedetti ('Tchaikovsky/Bruch Violin Concertos')
Pianist Dame Mitsuko Uchida ('Schumann/Fantasie')

Male Artist of the Year

British conductor and pianist Antonio Pappano Mexican-born tenor Rolando Villazón
Australian conductor Sir Charles Mackerras (who died on 14 July 2010 a year after collecting his debut Classic BRIT award for the Critics' Award in 2009.)

Composer of the Year

Eric Whitacre for his US and UK number 1 album 'Light & Gold'.
Karl Jenkins for 'Gloria / Te Deum'
Arvo Pärt for 'Symphony No.4'.

Newcomer Award in association with MasterCard

German pianist Alice Sara Ott,
Montenegrin classical guitarist Miloš
Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang.

The Critics' Award

Antonio Pappano, (receiving his second nomination) for 'Rossini: Stabat Mater',
German tenor Jonas Kaufmann with 'Verismo Arias'
British violinist Tasmin Little for the album 'Elgar: Violin Concerto'.

Classic FM Album of the Year
