Tom Cruise will battle drones as he reprises his role as fighter pilot Maverick in the upcoming Top Gun sequel.

Written by Justin Marks the new film will follow on from the original 1986 hit.

Producer David Ellison has dropped hints as to what film fans can expect, saying Cruise will fight against drone technology.

"[Marks] has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today," Ellison told Collider during a junket to promote Terminator: Genisys in Berlin.

Maverick: Tm Cruise in the original 1986 film

"It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters... it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."

Speaking about Cruise, Ellison said: "There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."

News of a Top Gun sequel first emerged five years ago, and Cruise confirmed his interest during a Sky News interview last year when he said: "If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do."
