US actor Tom Hanks surprised a bride and groom when he crashed their wedding in New York.

Hanks, 60, was jogging in Central Park when he spotted newlyweds Elisabeth and Ryan and couldn’t resist congratulating the smitten pair.

Ignoring the dress code, the Forrest Gump actor walked over in his running gear and introduced himself to the happy couple.

The couple were clearly delighted by the A-list intruder and posed for a string of photos.

Photographer Meg Miller uploaded a montage of black and white photos showing Hanks shaking the groom’s hand and planting a kiss on the bride’s.

The images were captioned: “Yesterday's wedding was so beautiful! Elisabeth and Ryan you planned one amazing celebration. The icing on the cake was @tomhanks stopping in Central Park to wish them congratulations.”

Hanks also made sure to capture the moment and took a selfie of himself with the newlyweds.

Sharing it on his Twitter account he posted: “Elizabeth and Ryan! Congrats and blessings! Hanx.”

Speaking to the New York Daily News, Elisabeth described the moment as “pretty amazing”.

She said: "He just walked up to us and took off his hat and glasses and said, 'Hi, I'm Tom Hanks.

“It was pretty amazing that he stopped."

It's not the first time the acting legend has crashed a wedding.

He offered his congratulations to a couple who tied the knot at a church where he was filming Forrest Gump.

The actor was sat in a car and honked the horn before jumping out and telling the bride: “Hey, I’m Tom Hanks, and I just wanted to say good luck!”

Hanks later signed a photo from the wedding day and wrote: “Congratulations! The only bride more beautiful was the one I married….I’m just sorry I missed the ceremony! God Bless, Tom Hanks.”
