Celebrities from David Walliams to Piers Morgan have reacted to the news that Jeremy Clarkson has been axed from Top Gear after an investigation found the presenter hit producer Oisin Tymon in the mouth, causing "swelling and bleeding to his lip".

Despite a one million strong petition to reinstate Clarkson as host, BBC boss Tony Hall said the broadcaster must now "look to renew Top Gear for 2016" following today's decision.

Britain’s Got Talent judge Walliams joked that former Supermarket Sweep presenter Dale Winton had been appointed as host on the popular motoring show.

Alongside a picture of Winton in a bubble bath, Walliams wrote: “Dale Winton celebrating the announcement that he is the new host of #TopGear.”

Jim Davidson also 'solved' the problem of finding a replacement by asking BBC bosses for the job.

He tweeted: “dear BBC I would like to do Top gear please.”

Piers Morgan – who today announced that he would be guest presenting Good Morning Britain for one week in April – tweeted: “Shall we go for it, lads @ChrisEvans @MayorofLondon? #TopGear #NewDreamTeam."

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker offered his opinion, tweeting: "I'm not sure which news is worse; @jeremyclarkson losing a job or @piersmorgan getting one."

Top Gear co-host James May forced fans to question his continued role on the show as he changed his Twitter bio.

It now reads: "Former TV presenter only remembered for saying 'Oh c**k'. Or was that the other bloke?"

Comedian Frankie Boyle posted: "Clarkson has no doubt got what he deserves: an £8 million pound contract from C4 to present a show called Immigrant Patrol from a submarine."

Columnist Caitlin Moran wrote, "A lot of men in high-waisted jeans will be flying them half-mast today #clarkson #sorrow," before following up the post with the hashtag: "#terriblementalimage."

Ian Hyland joked that Clarkson's next TV role will be as a contestant on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here: "Jeremy Clarkson is now a must for I'm A Celebrity. Imagine how mental he'll go when Ant & Dec plonk the (cold) ostrich penis on his plate."
