Alec Newman is backing a campaign targeting ex servicemen and women who do not realise they are eligible for charity support.

Alec, who plays headteacher Michael Byrne in the BBC One school drama, has lent his support to Blind Veterans UK's No One Alone campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the help the charity can provide for ex forces personnel with sight problems.

He said: "Having seen the work of Blind Veterans UK at first hand and met some of its truly inspirational members, I feel it is vital that more vision impaired ex-servicemen and women are made aware of the fantastic support they could be getting from the charity. There are literally thousands of veterans who simply don't realise that Blind Veterans UK is here for them."

The No One Alone campaign is aimed at all ex-Armed Forces personnel with sight problems and their families.

But Blind Veterans UK is particularly keen to reach the national service generation of men, who are in their 70s and 80s, trying to cope with a severe sight problem and unaware that their time in the forces, however brief or long ago, means they are eligible for the charity's free support.
