One Direction fans were today promised “more shirtless moments than you can imagine” as the director of a new documentary about the band revealed details of their forthcoming 3D film.

Super Size Me star Morgan Spurlock promised there would also be plenty of emotional tear-jerking moments in the documentary, One Direction: This Is Us, due for release on August 30, as well as capturing their “wild side”.

Spurlock, 42, said that shooting the documentary, which is produced by Simon Cowell, has been an “incredible opportunity” and revealed that he shot the first 3D show at the O2 last night, where the band are performing as part of their UK and Ireland Tour.

Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan are following in the footsteps of Justin Bieber and Beyoncé who have both also made tour documentaries.

In a live Twitter Q&A, Spurlock also revealed how the band have a fitness trainer who is “keeping them off the Big Macs” to stay in shape for their world tour.

When asked by one fan whether there would be any “shirtless moments” in the film, he said: “More shirtless moments than you can imagine, now how many of those make it into the final film we’ll have to wait and see”

In answer to another question he said: “You can’t film 1D without capturing their wild side! And that fun attitude is infectious, it takes over the whole film crew.”

He added: “We spend a lot of down time with the band, with their families and friends. We really wanted you to see what their ‘normal’ lives are like.”

Spurlock, who is best known for award-winning documentary film Super Size Me and reality TV series 30 Days which executive produced and starred in, said he was attracted to doing the film because 1D are “one of the biggest bands in the world”.

He said the band came up with the film title themselves, adding: “They really wanted it to convey that it was them bringing you into their lives.”

He added: “There have been some really lovely emotional moments that we’ve captured, I think fans may shed a tear or two while watching.”
