The first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse has arrived, and it gives fans of the comic book franchise a huge amount to look forward to in the run up to its May release.

The film follows 2014 instalment Days of Future Past, which saw the series move into a bold new direction as the time-meddling Seventies adventure meant the events of the original trilogy never came to pass.

Set in the Eighties, Apocalypse has long been touted as an X-Men take on the disaster movie genre, and that sounds like it could be about right.

The titular villain is deemed the first ever mutant, heralded as a deity when he first rose to power in Ancient Egypt - and now he’s back, ready to wreak havoc on Professor Xavier’s young mutant team.

As a sequel to X-Men: First Class and Days of Future Past, Apocalypse once again stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr, aka Professor X and Magneto, played in the original films by Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen.

While McAvoy’s youthful interpretation of Xavier has seen the character with long flowing hair, the Apocalypse trailer gives our first look at the character with his iconic bald look.

Also shown for the first time are looks at Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Lana Condor as Jubilee, and Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse himself.

X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in UK cinemas on May 19, 2016
