Zayn Malik treated fans to a new song as he performed live on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

Malik, 23, joined the talk show host on Wednesday night to perform his next single, It's You.

He took to the stage to belt out lyrics including: "I won't, I won't, I won't / Cover the scar / I'll let it be / So my silence / So my silence won't / Be mistaken for believing / Am I wrong for wanting us to make it?"

The song is about his split from Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards. Speaking to Zane Lowe about the track he said: "I just felt like I needed to put myself out there on that just because it was a form of therapy for me and it did help get me through some s**t."

It marked a night of firsts for the solo singer following his departure from One Direction in March 2015. It was his first appearance on a TV show since quitting One Direction and his first live solo performance.

The singer also showed off the artwork for his debut album, Mind Of Mine. The cover features a picture of a young Malik with his arms tattooed.

It comes weeks after his debut single Pillowtalk stormed to number one on the UK Top 40 chart, and secured number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In total it topped the charts in 68 countries.

Malik's appearance on Fallon's chat show should have marked his second televised appearance.

In January he was scheduled to appear on the Graham Norton show but pulled out at the last minute citing scheduling issues.
