Centre stage: big name performers keep theatre attendance afloat

TV stars and big name performers are keeping theatre ticket sales up, says a new report.

Gavin and Stacey star James Corden, Kevin Spacey and former Doctor Who David Tennant are among the famous names to have appeared on tread the boards in the West End recently, helping box office receipts reach £528 million in 2011.

The report's author, Richard Andrews, said that "major name actors in plays" were a "big driver behind attendances," which totted up at 13.9 million.

The research compiled by the Society of London Theatre (Solt) also showed that London theatregoers are making a saving of more than £8 on each ticket- paying an average of £37.97 for tickets with an average face value oft £46.40.
