Chris Evans is to make his return to television as host of The One Show on Friday nights.

The Radio 2 breakfast DJ will replace Adrian Chiles, who will continue to present the hit BBC1 programme from Monday to Thursday.

Back on the small screen: Chris Evans will host The One Show

The appointment comes more than a decade after Evans resigned from Radio 1 on air after the BBC station refused to let him have Fridays off to present Channel 4's TFI Friday.

Reports that BBC executives wanted Evans, 44, to take over from Chiles, 43, on Fridays, alongside Christine Bleakley, 31, in a more entertainment-led show, first emerged last autumn.

Chiles was reported to have turned down an offer to move to ITV after news of the potential Evans move to The One Show was leaked.

Chiles is yet to sign a new BBC deal, but he is likely to stay on the show, with Evans hosting on Fridays.

A BBC spokeswoman would not confirm the Evans move, saying: "While we do not discuss contracts, Adrian is part of our plans for the future of The One Show."

The One Show launched on the BBC four years ago, with ratings rising steadily to 7.4 million in January.

Evans, whose last regular TV presenting job was hosting OFI Sunday for ITV in 2005, took over from Sir Terry Wogan on Radio 2's weekday breakfast show in January, a move which is said to have boosted audience figures.
