Joe Strummer, the former frontman of punk band The Clash, left an estate worth nearly £1 million, it was revealed yesterday.

The singer, guitarist and songwriter died aged 50 of a heart attack three days before Christmas 2002 at his farmhouse in Broomfield, Somerset.

Probate records disclose his estate was £986,229, reduced after liabilities to £945,132.

Strummer, whose real name was John Graham Mellor, left everything to his wife, Lucinda.

A punk icon, he was in fact born the son of a diplomat in the Turkish capital Ankara and went to boarding school.

The Clash had 16 top 40 hits, including Rock the Casbah.

Their third album, London Calling, was named greatest of the 1980s by Rolling Stone magazine – even though it came out in 1979.
