Comic actor and writer John Junkin died yesterday at 76.

The veteran star, who appeared with the Beatles in A Hard Day's Night in 1964 and later in television shows including The Goodies and EastEnders, had been suffering from lung cancer.

During a career which spanned six decades, he worked with comedy legends such as Morecambe and Wise, Ronnie Barker and Spike Milligan. At his peak, he appeared in 30 different television shows in the space of two months and presented his own show, Junkin, on ITV for four years.

His friend, former Radio One DJ Dave Lee Travis, said: 'He was a great character who was a joy to be with. He often said if he had gone through the day without making someone laugh, it had been wasted.'
