Coronation Street tonight beat EastEnders and Emmerdale to win best soap at the TV Quick and TV Choice Awards.

But Emmerdale, so often overshadowed by its two big rivals, also celebrated a double victory.

Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Tate, was crowned best soap actress, beating Coronation Street's Kate Ford (Tracy Barlow) and June Brown (Dot Branning) from EastEnders.

Shane Richie won best soap actor for playing Alfie Moon in EastEnders.
Lacey Turner, who plays Albert Square bad girl Stacey Slater, was named best soap newcomer.

The awards, held at the Dorchester Hotel on London's Park Lane, were voted by readers of TV Quick and TV Choice.

Christopher Eccleston was named best actor for his role in Dr Who despite quitting the show after just one series.

The best actress award went to Julie Walters for her portrayal of a tough headmistress in drama Ahead of the Class.

Strictly Come Dancing was named best entertainment show and I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! triumphed over Big Brother in the best reality show category.

Jamie's School Dinners, which saw TV chef Jamie Oliver on a crusade to improve school meals, won best factual show.

Footballers' Wives is the nation's best loved drama while the best new drama award went to Desperate Housewives. There were also prizes for The Paul O'Grady Show and The Vicar of Dibley.

Old favourite The Antiques Roadshow was crowned best lifestyle show, beating How Clean Is Your House? and Location, Location, Location.
