Amy Winehouse was visibly distraught after visiting her husband Blake Fielder-Civil at HM Pentonville Prison for the first time on Tuesday.

The strain appears to be taking its toll on the Rehab singer, who was teary eyed as she stopped into a store near the jail to pick up some supplies for her man.

Amy, who wore a checked red shirt, jeans and scuffed ballet flats, was spotted buying a 20-pack of cigarettes and some of his favourite snacks.

It is the first time the singer, whose thick black eyeliner was smeared across her face, was allowed to see her husband behind bars.

Yesterday, Blake appeared in court mouthing the words "I love you" to his distraught and tearful mother, as he was ordered back to custody on charges of grievous bodily harm and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

After appearing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, accused of inflicting GBH with intent, the trial was adjourned following his arrest on Saturday.

Miss Winehouse plans to treat Fielder Civil to a luxury four-week "backpackers" holiday over the Christmas and New Year period.

Due to complete her sell-out tour at the beginning of next month, Miss Winehouse booked the couple's flights over the weekend and informed him about the trip during an emotional phone call yesterday morning.

"She knows Blake has had a really miserable time of things of late and wanted to cheer him up by making a spectacularly romantic gesture.

"The pair of them have fantasised about getting away from it all and going unrecognised abroad and Amy felt that India would be the prefect place to do just that.

"She is convinced Blake will be cleared of all charges and is so confident that she as already booked and paid for the flights.

"The pair are communicating every day from prison, in emotional and very tearful conversations.

"When Amy broke the news about the trip, Blake broke down in tears - he was so touched."

Miss Winehouse's holiday plans come as Fielder-Civil faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if found guilty of trying to buy off James King, a publican he attacked in June last year.

Along with his friend Michael Brown, the court heard that he had "stamped and kicked" King outside the Macbeth Pub in north London.

"Some of that has video footage."

He was granted technical bail for the GBH charge but was returned to Pentonville Jail because a district judge refused to free him following his weekend court appearance.

Meanwhile the alleged victim in the attack, Mr King, appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court also charged with conspiring to pervert the course of justice.

Fielder Civil is due to appear in court again on November 23.
