Pete Doherty has recorded a track in dedication to his comic idol Tony Hancock for a BBC2 documentary to be screened on Boxing Day

The exclusive track, entitled Lady Don't Fall Backwards, does not appear on any of the rocker's albums.

The track refers to the book Hancock was reading in an episode of Hancock's Half Hour called The Missing Page.

The controversial star is also interviewed in the 90-minute documentary, entitled The Unknown Hancock, about his hero, who died in 1968.

Doherty says: "It's certainly a language of a long gone era, if it even existed in the first place.

"I don't know whether it's possible to be nostalgic for a time that didn't exist, but I think I am".

Up the Bracket, the title of the debut album from The Libertines, Doherty's former band, referred to a favourite Hancock phrase "Punch up the bracket".

Doherty responded with a Hancock joke when fans asked how he was when he appeared in court in 2004 for possession of a 4in flick-knife.

Some of Hancock's closest friends and colleagues feature in the new documentary.

Colleagues, including co-stars Hugh Lloyd, Sylvia Syms and June Whitfield and writers Galton and Simpson, explain what it was like rehearsing and performing with the star.

Lyrics from Doherty's song:

When nightmares come
I will sing you a song
And I will love you forever or at least until the morning comes
No don't you fall backwards
Come on and fall into my arms
