EastEnders star Ray Panthaki suffered an alleged attack with a bottle during a night out in Essex, it emerged today.

Panthaki, 25, who plays Ronny Ferreira in the BBC soap, needed hospital treatment following the incident in the VIP suite of a nightclub in Gants Hill.

A BBC spokesman said tonight: "He was the subject of an unprovoked attack. He is going to be taking a few days off to recuperate."

The Sun newspaper said the actor was left covered in blood pouring from a wound above his eye.

It said his wound had to be "glued" shut by doctors.

Panthaki told the newspaper: "I'm overwhelmed with the support I have had from friends, family and the EastEnders cast. Right now I just want to rest."

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police were called at 1.10am on Saturday to the accident and emergency department of an east London hospital following an alleged assault on a male.

"It is believed the assault occurred in the VIP suite of a nightclub in Gants Hill."
