Eddie Izzard on last leg of 43 marathon challenge

Eddie Izzard will complete a heroic hyper-marathon today to raise money for charity.

The surrealist stand-up comedian, 47, has run a marathon almost every day since he took up the challenge for Sport Relief seven weeks ago.

He will have covered an incredible 1,100 miles by the time he reaches Trafalgar Square this afternoon.

Well-wishers keeping track of his progress on Twitter have joined him along the route through England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The two-times Emmy winner has run more than 30 miles a day, with just one day off a week. He did just five weeks training for the event.

He told GMTV: "When we were hunters we used to hunt this way, so everybody should be able to do this. But at the end I just spear a Twix and have a Diet Coke.

"Sport Relief, the sister charity to Comic Relief, love it when sportsmen and women do this stuff but when it's ordinary bozos like you and me they like it even better. They thought it was a crazy idea but I said I'm doing it anyway so they supported me.

"Today is my final run so hopefully I'll beat my personal best of five hours. I'll have done 43 marathons so should be able to stagger home if I want.

"I'm tired but it has been a great adventure. I'm going up past Potters Bar, across a couple of the bridges, and through the Olympics Village too because I want to show my support for the Olympics.

I know a few people have been iffy about it but we fought for it and I think it's going to be a fantastic thing."

All being well Izzard will reach Trafalgar Square at around 4pm today.
