The original ending to Fatal Attraction made millions shriek. But Natascha McElhone said she can scarcely remember it — so has no qualms about offering audiences a new one.

The actress said after the opening night of a West End stage adaptation of the Eighties movie: “I saw it as a teenager and fortunately it’s very foggy. So I can play Alex Forrest with total conviction and not feel I’m betraying any other ending.”

McElhone, 44, is back on the London stage for the first time in eight years and joined Sex And The City star Kristin Davis, 49 — making her West End debut — in declaring their love of the experience. Both said they would like to do more but it came down to what was offered.

And McElhone, who has been filming Californication in the US, said it was important to her to work on home turf in London. “I miss it,” she said. “My dream was always to be here.”

Mark Bazeley, 43, who plays the straying husband, said: “It’s good that our show is not the same as the film.

“It’s what the writer intended before Hollywood got to it.”

Fatal Attraction is at the Theatre Royal Haymarket till June 21. trh.co.uk
