Peckham wheeler-dealer Del Boy Trotter has struck gold - after Only Fools and Horses was named Britain's best sitcom.

The show, which chronicled the various get-rich-quick schemes of wannabe yuppy Derek Trotter, played by David Jason, beat shows including historical satire, Blackadder, and The Vicar of Dibley.

More than 1.5 million people voted in the competition, with ten shows making it to a final, broadcast live this weekend on BBC2, where celebrities made final pleas for their personal favourites.

Only Fools And Horses remains a hugely popular show, with 16.4 million people tuning in to the final episode broadcast on Christmas Day on BBC1.

Actor Jason said: "I am delighted that something which gave me some of the happiest times of my life still gives pleasure to so many people and am delighted for myself and everyone connected with the programme that we should have won, which against such competition is a great honour."

The show's writer, John Sullivan, said: "I started writing Only Fools and Horses in 1981 because I knew that in 23 years time there would be a Britain's Best Sitcom competition and I wanted to win it. I'm delighted for everyone connected with the series and my thanks to everyone who voted for us."

Only Fools And Horses scored 22% of the vote, with Blackadder second with 18% and the Vicar of Dibley third on 14%.

Dad's Army was next on 11.3%, with Fawlty Towers only just behind in fifth on 11.2%, Yes Minister was sixth on 8%, Porridge in seventh on 6%, Open All Hours was eighth with 4%, The Good Life made ninth with 3% and One Foot In The Grave was tenth on 2%.
