In kitten-print outfit and oversized perspex jewellery, Cyrus, 21 on Saturday, was among the stars performing at the ceremony in Los Angeles.
Not to be upstaged, Lady Gaga, 27, played a sexy secretary with R Kelly, 46, as a cigar-smoking president — echoing the Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton scandal — for a duet of Do What U Want. But it was Perry, 29, who stole the show in traditional Japanese dress as she sang Unconditionally.
Rihanna, 25, gave an emotional speech after being presented with the icon award by her mother Monica Braithwaite. She also won the award for favourite female artist (soul/R&B).
One Direction performed Story Of My Life and were presented with the awards for favourite band and favourite album for Take Me Home.
Taylor Swift won awards for artist of the year, favourite female country artist and favourite country album, while for soul/R&B Justin Timberlake won favourite male artist and favourite album for The 20/20 Experience.
Ariana Grande, 20, was named best new artist.
