Forget Extras, Ricky Gervais is now part of Hollywood's comedy fraternity thanks to a starring role in Ben Stiller's new movie.

He took his place on the red carpet at the Natural History Museum in New York with his partner, TV producer Jane Fallon, for the world premiere of Night at the Museum.

The star of The Office, which won two US Golden Globes, makes his Hollywood debut as the manager of the museum where Stiller, playing a security guard, tries to stop the exhibits wreaking havoc when they come to life.

Gervais, 45, bagged the part after Stiller guest-starred in his BBC comedy Extras.

Other stars in the film, which opens in the UK on Boxing Day, include Robin Williams, Steve Coogan and Dick Van Dyke.
