Glitter: Girl of 11 slept in my bed

Gary Glitter has admitted that an 11-year-old girl slept in his bed - but he denies having sex with her.

The former glam rocker told police in Vietnam he allowed the girl to sleep in his room when she said she was afraid of ghosts.

The 61-year-old also told officers he went swimming with young girls in his pool but again denied sex abuse.

'He said he thinks they are like his grandchildren,' said his lawyer, Le Thanh Kinh.

Glitter is being held over claims he paid underage girls - one just 12 - for sex at his rented home in the resort of Vung Tau. He faces a firing squad if convicted of sex with a child under 13, which is considered rape in Vietnam.

Mr Kinh said Glitter had admitted the 11-year-old and her aunt had come to stay in a guest room. But during the the night they came into his room, saying they were afraid of ghosts, and he allowed them to sleep in his bed.

On another occasion, Glitter told them they could not sleep with him but ' they explained to him that in Vietnamese families, the father, the mother and the children sleep in one bed', Mr Kinh said.

Police have interviewed six girls, aged 11 to 23, who claim to have had sex with him. No charges have been made and the star denies the claims.

Glitter, real name Paul Francis Gadd, was convicted in Britain in 1999 of possessing child pornography and served two months in jail.

He has been held in Vietnam since November 19, when he was arrested trying to board a flight to Thailan.
