He may revel in his mockney hard-man image but Guy Ritchie is descended from royalty.

Ritch blood: Guy comes from a royal heritage

Renowned for such gangland flicks as Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels, the British film director is a distant descendant of Edward I, according to the ancestry website findmypast.com.

Ritchie and Madonna divorced last year. His ex-wife was dubbed "her Madgesty" after he
shortened her name to Madge. Using the 1911 census — online for the first time today — the website also shows Ritchie is the great-great-grandson of renowned major general Edward McLaughlin.

It also reveals that Jude Law, who will star as Doctor Watson in Ritchie's new film, Sherlock Holmes, is descended from a master baker. William Law was 36 in 1911 and lived with his wife, five children and two servants in a nine-bedroom house in Brixton, south London.
