Sports quiz They Think It's All Over has been axed after 11 years. The BBC1 show will not be returning for another series.

Jonathan Ross quit the comedy quiz earlier this year. Original host Nick Hancock left last year and was replaced by comic Lee Mack.

Announcing the end of the show, BBC1 controller Peter Fincham said it had reached its "natural conclusion".

He said: "They Think It's All Over has had a great run on BBC1, lasting 11 years.

"It rewrote the rule book by bringing comedy and sport together in a fresh and anarchic way. It has featured a great range of comedians rubbing shoulders with Olympic gold medalists and world champions, and has been sheer unadulterated fun."

The show began in 1995 with David Gower and Gary Lineker as team captains.
They were succeeded by David Seaman, Phil Tufnell, Ian Wright and Boris Becker.

Ross announced his departure in February and said he wanted to concentrate on other projects, including his BBC1 chat show Friday Night With Jonathan Ross and his Saturday morning slot for Radio 2.

He recently signed a new three-year deal with the BBC worth a reported £18 million.
