James Nesbitt tipped to take over as Dr Who

Cold Feet star James Nesbitt is set to try his hand at tackling Daleks when David Tennant steps down as Dr Who, according to reports.

While Hugh Grant and Jason Statham have also been tipped for the popular role, Nesbitt is said to be the new front runner to play the eleventh Dr Who.

Tennant widely expected to leave the show after the next series.

Nesbitt won an important fan with his acclaimed performance in Jekyll - writer Steven Moffat, who is reportedly taking over as Dr Who's executive producer, was particular be impressed by his turn in the show.

A source told The Sun: "Moffat has worked with James on Jekyll and the talk in BBC drama is that he's a shoo-in as the next Doctor.

"First a Scottish Doctor, now we could have a Northern Irish one."

The popular series has attracted a strong list of celebrity guests in recent times, including pop princess Kylie Minogue and comedian Catherine Tate.

Nesbitt is currently filming a modern day take on Cinderella for a planned fairytale special on the BBC.
