Jeremy Renner has returned to work one year after almost being killed in a snowplough accident.

On January 1, 2023, the Marvel actor, 53, was left in critical condition after “breaking more than 30 bones” while trying to save a family member from the path of the six-tonne machine near his Lake Tahoe home close to the Nevada-California state border in the US.

Doctors needed to insert metal plates into his torso to stabilise his ribcage as well as his eye socket, which had caved in. They also inserted a titanium metal rod in the Marvel star's left shin to hold it together after it was snapped.

Now, after numerous surgeries and rehabilitation, Renner has done what might have seemed impossible 12 months ago.

Taking to Instagram on January 10, the California native shared a selfie from the set of Mayor of Kingstown – a Paramount+ series in which Renner has played the titular character, Mike McLusky, for two seasons already.

"Day one on set … nervous today," he captioned the snap.

Adding: "Hope this works out that I can ACTUALLY pull this off for our production and more importantly the fans @mayorofkingstown @paramountplus."

Renner’s co-star Hugh Dillon, who also co-created the series alongside Yellowstone chief Taylor Sheridan, commented on the post saying: “Back with a vengeance brother. YOU KILLED IT TODAY.”

Lending their support to their leading actor, the Mayor of Kingstown's official Instagram also marked the occasion with a post of their own.

They shared an imaged of Renner in character, which read: "The mayor is back. Season three in production".

"Back in action. #MayorOfKingstown season 3 has started production! #ParamountPlus," they wrote alongside side it.

Renner, who is best known for playing Clint “Hawkeye” Barton in the Marvel film franchise, recently reflected on his horrific ordeal to mark its one-year anniversary. Speaking to CNN, he said: “I’m just so blessed I had so many things to live for, I have a giant family, a 10-year-old daughter.”

“I would have disappointed and really messed up a lot of people’s lives if I would have passed. I’m also pretty stubborn, there’s a lot for me to fight for and recovery was just a one-way road in my mind and my recovery."
