Jerry Hall: The ex-model from Texas said Mick Jagger, the father of her four children made her pay for the children and the bills

The mother of four children with the Rolling Stone - Elizabeth, 23, James, 21, Georgia, 15 and nine-year-old Gabriel - claimed that despite his millions, Mick refused to cough up any dosh for the family.

But the 50-year-old model and actress, who is set to take to the stage again in Eve Ensler's play The Vagina Monologues at The Mayfair Theatre in Southampton in a reprisal of her 2004 run in the West End, said that she still got on with her ex, and revealed that he was the love of her life.

She said: "He always wanted me to pay for everything to do with the house and children, which I didn't mind doing, I guess, because I had the money. He's generous with presents, but yeah, he's pretty tight with the day to day stuff.

"I can't resist having the odd little poke at him, but basically we get on fine.

"I had a friendly divorce, which is quite an achievement these days. I don't actually think that marriages have to last forever.

"I'm an optimistic person, and I'm quite willing to accept that these things happen for a reason, in a spiritual way.

"I think it's healthier not to be crying over spilt milk, and let's face it - as the poet Wendy Cope says - there are so many awful men out there you can't avoid running into a few of them.

"I still like Mick. I think he's mesmerising on stage, and he's a great dad. I mean, he travels a lot, he's very busy, but when he's here he tries as much as he can to see them. Nobody's perfect.

"I'm dating a bit now, but I haven't got a serious relationship. You know, I was with Mick for a long time. Hopefully that big love will happen again with someone else, but I'm quite resigned that if it doesn't, I will still find ways to be happy."

Hall also hit out at women who have plastic surgery, saying that they only go on to the knife to try to hold on to their men as they age, and said that she was not afraid to grow old gracefully.

She said: "I think cosmetic surgery is terrifying. It never looks good. Those women look weird. They look in the mirror and think they look great, but they don't see what we see.

"You can see too much of the white of the eye, and this bit of the cheek is too tight, and they have these weird eyebrows sticking straight up. I think it's hideous. They scare small children.

"I do think most women have stuff done for men, which can't be right. Actually, if you are having cosmetic surgery you're with the wrong man because you are either insecure or you're desperately trying to hang on to a guy who's obviously not interested or who doesn't make you feel good."

She told the Evening Standard: "I'm too lazy anyway. We're all getting old, we're all dying and it's no big deal. I'm not afraid of it. I think it's natural and normal."
