Jesse James felt cheating on Sandra Bullock was the best way to "assert" his "independence".

The motorcycle enthusiast was revealed as having been unfaithful to the A-list star just days after she won an Oscar last March, and he now blames the pressures of their high profile relationship for his infidelity.

In his autobiography, 'American Outlaw', Jesse - who starred in reality series 'West Coast Choppers' about his motorbike business - felt he had become known as Sandra Bullock's Husband and a reality TV star, rather than his own person.

He writes: "You're trapped, I thought suddenly. It came out of nowhere, but you're trapped pretty good, aren't you?

"I couldn't escape. Not even for an instant. Mentally at a loss, desperate for something to make me feel like I had some sense of freedom, I ran through the list of things I could do to assert my independence over my life. Infidelity, unfortunately, was at the top of the list."

The 42 year old also describes the first time he felt he was losing his independence was when the couple took a road trip to Mexico and his wife asked him to lower the volume of the radio.

He explained: "I lowered it. Of course I did. That's what any husband would do for his high-class wife.

"She wasn't some w***e in the back of a Daytona nightclub, she was a lady, with gentler tastes.

"But in the back of my mind, I couldn't help but feel kind of cheated. It was like I was Huckleberry Finn, when Widow Douglas decides to adopt him. They were 'sivilizing' me, and I didn't know how to make them stop."

Since their divorce, Jesse has got engaged to tattoo artist Kat Von D, while Sandra has adopted a son, Louis, and said the split has made her a "better person".
