Jonathan Ross poked fun at his Film 2010 successor Claudia Winkleman as he helped host a special charity event.

Hosting part of Channel 4's Comedy Gala at the O2 Arena in London last night, Ross joked: "It's great to be here but the way my career's going, it's great to be anywhere.

Amused: Jonathan Ross joked about his Film 2010 successor

"I had to get here quick before Claudia Winkleman stepped in."

Meanwhile, comedians Patrick Kielty and Sean Lock risked the wrath of Michael Jackson fans with their respective sets.

Lock said he was relieved to "finally" get to the O2 after buying tickets to see Jackson perform there, while Kielty said the charity was an appropriate one "because no two words sum up [Jackson's] career more than the words 'sick' and 'children"'.

Jo Brand also braved a turn, despite battling a bout of norovirus, and Hollywood star Johnny Depp pre-recorded a message expressing his regret at not being there.

Lee Evans was presented with a lifetime achievement award by Jack Dee.

Evans auctioned the gong winning a bid for £5,000 from somebody sat in the one of the hospitality boxes.

Channel 4's Comedy Gala will be broadcast on Easter Monday.
